-breaking storm for them. new york city's probably going to be in the 12 to 18-inch range. here in boston, we are under blizzard warnings now. blizzard conditions expected with the prolonged time of wind and heavy snow. the snow is really picking up in boston right now. the radar showing it's all snow. temperatures there below freezing and the timing is such that the snow will continue to pick up over the next few hours. by nightfall, probably two to four inches of snow. blizzard conditions this evening. probably 25 to 40 hello mile-her hof sustained winds and through the night and even rising to 35 to 60-mile-per-hour range. 12 to 18 inches more falling and then tomorrow morning beginning to see it taper off and additional five inches could fall and blizzard conditions for a while longer, perhaps even after the snow tapers off and visibility will be very low. we'll continue to watch all of new england, as well as new york city, which is under that blizzard threat, as well. you're under a blizzard warning from new york northward and out toward long island and seeing the possibility of gusty w

. indra petersons reporting live from boston this morning. now to new york city where wind gusts of 50 miles per hour could cut power to thousands. foot of snow and coastal flooding also predicted. this blizzard on the exact same path as superstorm sandy, that could mean more misery for people still trying to recover from that storm. alison kosik is at columbus circle in manhattan. what is new york doing to prepare? >> reporter: right now we certainly are feeling a nice steady flow of snow coming down and not really sticking except for one or two snowballs we're making on the side here. you look out here, everybody's going to work as usual just like a normal bad weather day. everybody knows what's coming later and that's the tricky point. new york city mayor michael bloomberg is concerned about the cleanup because the storm is expected to really hit around rush hour when everybody's trying to get home, that could make it difficult for those salt spreaders and those plows to get through the streets but also extra trains are coming out for those who live on long island, the lirr is addin

, the storm center itself is in the vicinity of cape cod and from connecticut to long island. new york city is on the west edge of the most activity as far as snow is concerned and connecticut has the highest measurements right now with two feet of snow and as you can see on the radar, still blustering. >> as john was mentioning, the snow doesn't look like it wants to move out very fast. it has the potential to be a record-breaker. >> this morning 600 businesses and homes without power, the errant is closed. thousands of flights are grounded. james gray has more. >> the amount of snow across the northeast. in some areas including boston, accumulations could reach three feet or more. some of that snow pushed by winds of up to 75 miles an hour. a brutal combination creating dangerous blizzard conditions. the storm has literally stopped most of new england in its tracks. more than 1,800 cancellations at area airports and 4700 flights canceled nationwide. the governor of massachusetts today ordered all cars off the roadaway starting at 4:00 p.m. after this 19-car pileup in maine. scattered cars

's very unusual to see a forecast like this. >> new york city going to see 12 to 18 inches. more like a foot of snowfall expected for new york city. with places like new york, you're under blizzard warnings out towards long island and northward. we will see, we think, blizzard conditions as those winds really begin to kick up. especially tonight. maybe 40, 50 miles per hour to blow that snow around and limit your visibility down below a quarter of a mile for a long period of time. you're in the rain right now. mixed with sleet. it is snow toward the north and cooler air settling in, it is all going to turn to snowfall. we've given this a nine out of ten. that means we're going to find very widespread impacts here to the city. a mixture of snow and rain here today. probably those winds up to around 20 to 30 miles per hour. then tonight it really gets going. the snow will be on the increase with eight to 12 inches falling. blizzard conditions will prevail as those winds kick up, and those blizzard conditions lasting even into tomorrow as the snow tapers off will still see the wind blowi

the way up to new england. this is coming as several cities in the region are still dealing with the snow from last weekend's blizzard. elizabeth prann is live in new haven, connecticut with that part of the story. what are they doing with all that snow? i see it's still piled up behind you. >> yeah, that snow basically has nowhere to go because just like you said, cities across connecticut were slammed by that blizzard. something up to three feet of snow. in new haven, i want to show you the solution. basically we're seeing dump trucks come to this location and just dump tons of snow. we heard from city officials that 860 million pounds of snow fell. that was only on the roadways in new haven. that's not including private homes and roof tops. officials report they have requested additional federal funding. the president already agreed to reimburse 75% of the first 48 hours after disaster. the states are asking for an additional 24 hours, saying these are simply extraordinary circumstances. arthel. >> i say extraordinary indeed. 860 million pounds. that's a lot of snow, i'll tell you. >>

and well here at 30 rock in new york city. this is "the ed show." let's get to work. good to have you with us tonight, folks. thanks for watching. the northeastern portion of the united states is still recovering from the devastation of sandy, and tonight the region is being hit by another powerful storm. the massive nor'easter could be one of the worst in history. well, you've got governors declaring states of emergency in new york, connecticut, and massachusetts, along with rhode island and maine. in boston, the city is the epicenter of two storms which could break boston's all-time snowstorm record of 27.6 inches. up and down the northeastern coast, between 1 and 3 feet of snow is expected to fall. forecasters warned of blizzard conditions including wind gusts of up to 75 miles per hour. this could cause widespread power outages this evening. the national guard was activated in states of connecticut, massachusetts, new york, of course to help with emergency management. the storm comes. ironically, almost 35 years to the day after the blizzard of 1978. the catastrophic snowfall and

to intensify through the evening here. salt and sand is being loaded into trucks in cities across the northeast. >> we have a 34,000 tons of salt over 600 pieces of equipment ready to be deployed throughout the storm. >> still, in boston and other areas where the snow is moving in, it may not be enough. in maine, 19 cars with part of a pile-up that started when a driver lost control on the ice. as conditions get worse, the governor of massachusetts has now closed roads across the entire state. >> i have now signed an executive order banning vehicle traffic effective at 4:00 today. >> air travel is also out. more than 3,000 flights have been canceled and that number is expected to grow along with accumulations of snow across the regionment snowplows, blowers and shovels are working overtime but can't -- it could threaten power lines. >> that's our biggest concern. this storm presents variables that could produce some pretty extraordinary winds. >> with the potential of being holed up inside for several days, families are making a last-minute dash to make sure they have what they need to get thro

city we're now told the latest totals could be in the 14 inch range, boston is clearly the bulls eye of this northeast storm, but so many areas are going to feel it all around that and that city could get as much as three feet, we're being told right now. if you're planning to travel by air in the area on the map, you can pretty much forget it, folks. nearly 3800 flights have been canceled on the east coast, and the mayor of boston deploying work crews out in force, and virtually planning to shut the city down. they don't want anybody out on the roads. >> we have a 34,000 tons of salt over 600 pieces of equipment ready to be deployed throughout the storm. again, this is a storm of major proportion. stay off the roads. stay home. let the public works crews do their job the next 48 to 72 hours. >> so you hear that, and a live report coming up later in the hour from our fox extreme weather center which will give you the newest information and we will have an update coming in soon on the storm's path. and this is the other huge story right now, the desperate search for a suspected killer

. >> thanks, charlie. >>> now to kansas city missouri, where a natural gas explosion caused the inferno that devastated a downtown shopping district. police are searching for possible bodies in the rubble. affiliate kctv is at the scene in kansas city. >> reporter: the explosion rocked the upscale kansas city community just after 6:00 p.m. local time on tuesday. the towering blaze engulfed an entire block and injured over a dozen people some severely. just hours before the blast, many in the area had been complaining of a strong smell of gas. >> we finally called the gas company. they came out, they checked inside our building and said that we needed to evacuate. it wasn't two minutes when we were grabbing our stuff and the ex-motion hit and explosion hit and it hit you like a shock wave. >> reporter: it may have been triggered by a contractor hitting an underground gas line during construction. after one of the most popular restaurants of the city j.j.'s was destroyed by the flames kansas city's mayor is counting his blessings. >> i was there four or five times

into the murder of a new york city woman in turkey, 33-year-old woman reported missing two weeks ago vacationing lb in istanbul. her body was discovered this week near a wall. she had a head wound and was lying near a blanket. she may have been killed by someone else and then moved. according to local media reports 15 people are being questioned by turn irk police two days before she vanished. she was captured on this surveillance videotape near one of the main shopping centers. she leaves behind a husband and two sons. >> heather: we are getting new information on the tragic death of a legendary veteran, most lethal sniper in u.s. military history killed at a shooting at a texas gun range. chris kyle a navy seal that served in four tours in iraq. he and another man were gunned down by a former soldier who kyle was reportedly helping with post-traumatic stress disorder. eddie ray roth has been charged with two counts of murder. molly is live with more on this tragic story. >> chris kyle the u.s. military's most deadly sniper and another man were both killed at rough creek lodge 50 miles southwes
